Volume. Most haulers sell space in the truck, from a minimum charge up to a full load, so the price tracks how many cubic yards a pile fills once it is stacked. Breaking down furniture and bagging loose items can shrink a load noticeably.

A clear quote names the price for the load as seen, what happens if the pile turns out larger or smaller, any per-item fees, and where the load will be taken. Single items are priced on their own when they are the whole job. HomeGuide lists a mattress at $70 to $100, a washer or dryer at $70 to $205, a refrigerator at $35 to $60 and a piano at $50 to $100, while Angi's ranges run higher for the same items, including $200 to $400 for a piano and $100 to $200 for a couch. The spread reflects the labor involved, the disposal route for each item and local competition.
Dumpster sizes and what they cost
HomeGuide's 2026 dumpster figures put a one-week rental at about $360 on average, within a range of $220 to $780. By size, it lists a 10-yard container, about 14 feet long and 3.5 feet high with a two to three ton allowance, at about $350; a 15-yard at $400; a 20-yard, about 22 feet long and 4.5 feet high with three to four tons, at $450; a 30-yard at $500; and a 40-yard, allowing five to six tons, at $550.
The added charges are where a dumpster budget slips. Heavy materials such as shingles, concrete and wet drywall reach the weight allowance long before the container is full, and every ton over it costs $40 to $100 in HomeGuide's figures. In Anderson, a container placed in the street, an alley or on the sidewalk also needs the city's dumpster permit, while one on a private driveway does not fall under that rule.
